The Wentworth Region is located in the southwestern corner of New South Wales, Australia. This region is made up of the towns of Wentworth, Dareton, Buronga, and Gol Gol, and has a history dating back over 40,000 years.

The area was originally inhabited by Indigenous Australians, with the Barkindji people being the traditional custodians of the region. These people were semi-nomadic, moving between the Murray River and Darling River for food sources. Evidence of their occupation can still be seen in the form of scarred trees, shell middens, and stone tools.

In the early 1800s, European settlement began in the region when Captain Charles Sturt explored the Murray and Darling Rivers. Sturt and his party were the first Europeans to navigate the Murray River, and they named the area after William Wentworth, a prominent journalist and politician of the time.

By the 1850s, the Wentworth Region had become a bustling river port, with paddle steamers carrying goods up and down the rivers. This allowed for the growth of the agricultural industry, with wheat, wool, and citrus fruits becoming major exports from the region.

The region was also home to several large pastoral stations, including Polia Station and Gol Gol Station. These stations employed many workers, both Indigenous and European, and were responsible for shaping the landscape of the region. Many of these stations have since been converted to national parks or agricultural land.

However, the prosperity of the region was not without its dark history. The 1880s saw widespread persecution of Chinese immigrants in the region, with many being forced to pay a “protection fee” to the local police and facing violence if they refused to do so.

During World War II, the Wentworth Region played a crucial role as the site of a major training base for the Australian Army. The Mildura Military Base was located just across the border in Victoria, and many soldiers were stationed in Wentworth during their training. Today, remnants of this history can still be seen in the form of old barracks and training grounds.

The Wentworth Region has also played an important role in the history of Australian politics. William Wentworth, the man for whom the area is named, was a key figure in the push for Australian federation in the late 1800s. He was one of the founding fathers of the Australian Constitution and served as a member of parliament for many years.

More recently, the Wentworth Region has become known for its vibrant arts scene and natural beauty. The region is home to several prestigious arts festivals, including the Mildura Writers Festival and the Murray River International Music Festival. The Murray River provides a popular spot for water activities such as fishing, boating, and swimming.

In conclusion, the history of the Wentworth Region is long and varied, with stories of Indigenous occupation, European settlement, river ports, pastoralism, war, politics, and culture. From its earliest days to the present, the region has played an important role in Australian history and continues to be a vital part of the country’s landscape.
