Distinguished and Famous people from Wentworth Region

⛵ Captain John Egge

John Egge came from China to Australia in 1852 and worked aboard riverboats before establishing businesses at Wentworth. In 1860 he bought land at the town's early allotment sale. Selling pies and pasties from a camp oven grew into a bakery, trading interests and river transport. His wife Mary had also worked on the boats, and the family's enterprise became an important part of the port's commercial life. When they temporarily left for Adelaide in 1888, townspeople presented him with a testimonial and a diamond-set gold ring, marking the regard earned by a successful local trader.

🧭 Charles Sturt

Charles Sturt's 1830 boat expedition followed the Murrumbidgee into the Murray and reached its junction with the Darling near present-day Wentworth. The journey helped colonial authorities understand how the inland river system connected, before the growth of the later river port. Aboriginal people already knew and occupied the river country; the expedition's significance lay in what it established for European mapping and settlement. Sturt continued downstream towards Lake Alexandrina and the coast. Wentworth's association is this recorded exploration at the junction, rather than a claim that the town existed or that he lived there.

🌳 David James Jones — “Possum”

David James Jones, known locally as Possum, spent decades living apart from settled society along the Murray and Darling river country between Wentworth and Renmark. Local accounts describe makeshift camps, bush food and an aversion to human contact. Those accounts became part of regional folklore, so individual anecdotes are best treated as recollections rather than a fully documented daily record. A statue at Wentworth commemorates the recluse. His story adds a very different life to the district's merchants and explorers: a man remembered for withdrawing from the town economy rather than helping expand it.
